SORDES recognizes the critical connection between human health, livestock well-being, and nutrition in Somali communities. Pastoralist populations, in particular, depend on livestock for food, income, and economic stability, making their health inseparable from human well-being. SORDES’s integrated health and nutrition programs address these interrelated needs to improve livelihoods and resilience.
The organization provides essential healthcare services, including maternal and child health programs, vaccination campaigns, and treatment for common diseases like malaria and pneumonia. Nutrition education programs teach communities about balanced diets, breastfeeding, and malnutrition prevention, targeting vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and children under five.
For livestock, SORDES offers veterinary care, training on sustainable herding practices, and livestock restocking programs to rebuild herds lost to drought or conflict. Healthy livestock contribute to food security and ensure economic stability for pastoralist families. Mobile health clinics extend these services to remote areas, providing both human and animal healthcare in inaccessible regions.
Future plans involve expanding mobile clinics, scaling nutrition programs, and strengthening community capacity to manage livestock health. By integrating human and livestock health interventions, SORDES addresses the root causes of food insecurity and improves the overall well-being of Somali communities.
